May 2018 Meeting

    Spring is buzzing and so was the May meeting which took place on May 10th.

    Michael Timmes, our chapter President, opened the meeting with some general announcements:

    Legal Minute
    Rich Cino shared that in a recent press release Governor Murphy created a task force to examine Independent Contractors. This is being driven by the loss of tax revenue due to misclassification. This may be a good time to make sure your employees are properly classified.

    Presentation

    Thomas Loncar, CRPS®, AIF®, VP and Senior Retirement Consultant of OppenheimerFunds spoke on the topic of Operating in Compliance: Understanding IRS and DOL Audit Hot-Button Issues and How Plan Sponsors Can Address Them

    This very informative session offered much insight on the fiduciary responsibility of organizations to make sure that certain benefit programs are fair and in compliance with relevant laws. This presentation covered IRS and DOL audit “hot buttons,” and walked through some actual as well as hypothetical case studies.  Thomas reviewed common errors plan administrators typically make and offered ideas on how to mitigate or correct those mistakes. The presentation also covered best practices in benefit administration and provided checklists to help with managing fiduciary responsibilities.
